Paweł Kowalewski

Biography

Paweł Kowalewski (born 1958 in Warsaw)

From 1978 till 1983 he studied in the Department of Painting at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, where he received a diploma with distinction from Stefan Gierowski’s workshop. Since 1985 he has been a lecturer in the Design Department of Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and currently holds a habilitated doctorate. Even during his studies he was heavily involved in the development of the independent art scene, and the beginning of his career was defined by his work with Gruppa, whose crowning moment was their participation in the Documenta exhibition in Kassel in 1987 as well as participating in many other exhibitions both in Poland and abroad. In 1992 Paweł Kowalewski gave up painting and concentrated on interdisciplinary and performance work at the time of the Fin de siècle cycle of works.

From the beginning of his creative path Paweł Kowalewski developed the concept of “personal art, that is private” which was strongly connected to the artist’s own life, but which also referred to problems which the general viewer may face in a universal context. This basic oscillation between an individual’s own experience and the universality associated with his creativity has stayed with his work till this day and is a constant theme despite the many often very radical artistic decisions taken during his career.

Also an important element of the Paweł Kowalewski’s work is the political dimension, which over time became the axis of his program. At the beginning this was expressed as part of the general direction of activity of Gruppa as well as in individual works such as Mon cheri Bolscheviq or Zdicho jumps every night with a bottle of petrol, followed by a gradual evolution in the direction of work which forms part of an anti totalitarian discourse, such as the cycle NOT ALLOWED! and Totalitarianism Simulator.
