Paweł Kowalewski

Pre-auction exhibiton at the Królikarnia palace in Warsaw

Over a March weekend, at the Królikarnia Palace – a branch of the National Museum in Warsaw, a unique Action “Co-Kreacja” took place, organized by the Foundation Razem z Odwagą (Together with Courage) in cooperation with the Museum and a group of selected male and female artists: Tymek Borowski, Przemek Dzienis, Magda Komar, Pawel Kowalewski, Agnieszka Mastalerz and Karolina Wiktor, who created extraordinary works of art together with the participating children. The resulting works will be put up for charity auction at DESA Unicum.

The unique concept of the two artists participating in the event, representing different generations, sensibilities and creative methods and experiences – Agnieszka Mastalerz and Pawel Kowalewski – was to invite not only the young participants of the action, but also artificial intelligence to co-create the works.

One of the most classic motifs in the history of art – still life – was taken as a subject for the workshop. Participants of the workshop interpreted it in several ways, taking under the magnifying glass, among other things, the detail of the composition of flowers, vegetables and fruits, but also its texture, smell and even sounds. However, what will be the next step in the project will be far from the conventional art history and methods of painting.

Artificial intelligence would process the effects of the workshop, and the result would be the “paintings” it created – one of a kind, resulting from the imagination and sensitivity of the initiators, mature artists, and children, not yet shaped by any art education. The imagination of the participants was further triggered by the aura of the first days of the calendar spring and nature awakening to life after the long months of winter.

Can a soulless machine be taught sensitivity? Can it be taught to read and perhaps even use the language of artists, for which this sensitivity is a key element? These are the questions Mastalerz and Kowalewski have tried to answer by undertaking this artistic experiment. What will be its results? It will be possible to find out soon. The project will result in six works, unique prints in 70 x 70 centimeter formats – all of them (and much more!) will be on view at a pre-auction exhibition at the Rabbit House Palace. The opening will take place on Wednesday, March 26 at 7 pm.

The auction will take place at the DESA Unicum Auction House on April 11 at 7 pm.
