Paweł Kowalewski

Objects Created to Stimulate the Life of the Mind; The Invisible Eye of the Soul

Paweł Kowalewski, an icon of Polish art of the 1980s and the founder of the legendary Gruppa, returns with a solo exhibition of the latest paintings, which he calls “OBJECTS”. On May 28, at the Gallery of Contemporary Art WINDA in Kielce, 32 canvases by Kowalewski will be exhibited for the first time. The artpieces are inspired by the texts of the thinker Hannah Arendt, the artist’s travels to Africa and the general condition of the humanity. Kowalewski believes that we live in a world in which reason has gone bankrupt.

Opening: May 28, 2021, Friday at 6:30 pm
Exhibition: May 28. – 07.31.2021
Address: Gallery of Contemporary Art WINDA, Plac Moniuszki 2b, Kielce, Poland

As wrote Anda Rottenberg: “He painted uglily, like the whole Gruppa and like Andrzej Wróblewski a few decades earlier, who decided that matters of final significance could not be painted nicely. And like some outsiders of the New York School, who stained their paintings with deliberate blemishes. The ones affecting both colour and technique. Painting nicely is easier. And, of course, better absorbed by the public. But, is it necessary for an artist who wants to irritate the viewer?

Kowalewski believes that we live in a world in which reason has gone bankrupt. He sees this every day, even if his observations focus only on objects, although in fact this is not the case. It is he who takes them out of context, transforms them into signs and places them in his paintings. Art liberates. Art purifies. This is probably why he returned to painting. After all.”
